From allmusic.com:

If Ned Collette didn't have such a fine voice, things might have been easier for him; the richness and emotional warmth he brought to the songs on his solo debut, Jokes and Trials, led many to expect he was going to become the next Nick Drake. But in his subsequent work, Collette has made it obvious he has no intention of being just another singer/songwriter, even if he had the makings of a great one. 2 is Collette's second album with his backing combo Wirewalker, and like Over the Stones, Under the Stars, this music is more about sound and structure than Collette's vocals, or even what he's singing. With bassist Ben Bourke largely missing from these sessions on paternity leave, Collette and percussionist Joe Talia constructed most of these tracks by themselves, and they've crafted a set of compelling soundscapes that are artful and evocative, embracing elements of musique concrète in their ambitious use of editing, layering the songs with sheets of percussion, keyboards, and found sounds, and bringing an almost cinematic depth to Collette's lovely but ambitious pop melodies. Given that Collette has a degree in modern composition, it should come as no great surprise that he can make an album as challenging as 2, but this music never feels pretentious or arty for its own sake; Collette's perspective may be intellectual, but he understands that emotion is what drives music, and he brings a soul and passion to material that could easily have seemed cool and aloof in the hands of others. And while the music speaks stronger than the words, Collette's gifts as a lyricist are genuine and he still has a pretty great voice. Maybe he'll never get to be the next Nick Drake, but judging from 2, being Ned Collette is a pretty impressive achievement in itself.

Track Name: The Hedonist
In the whole time wasted of our radical descent
Did you take a look around at all the last minute repent
Their fingernails were dirty but their eyes were shining white
And the feathers in your cap still kept you grounded

You met her in a bar the likes of which you'd never seen
The locks were pulled and inside you lived out a mystery
And no one knows society when they get out at ten
And their faces have the look of being hounded

What's that sound?
Is it labour from above?
They're tryin' to lift the lid
They're tryin' to show you how to love
But you don't need it now it's all come crashing down around
And all you got's relief for being alone

Your spirit's in the attic but your head is resting soft
Upon the girl who once awake will smile and take off
The day unfolds like innocence if innocence is grey
And guilt's a reddy storm upon which innocence will play

The phone call comes in shrilling all the promise of a king
But quickly turns to solid black as cutting off it's ring
You hark to hear the voice of him who joined you on this ride
And now their teeth are bared and white and shining

What's that sound?
Is it labour from above?
They're tryin' to lift the lid
They're tryin' to show you how to love
But you don't need it now it's all come crashing down around
And all you got's relief for being alone

So awkward now you head on back to find the door is closed
And she who gave you shelter for that night has hit the road
And you are all alone, there is no sign of your old mate
And you start to think he wasn't even listening

And as you lie losing your breath down at the bottom of this well
It comes to you that maybe this ain't after all a hell
The leaves are soft and cool to touch, they hold you in their arms
And one last time you see the sky a-glistening

What's that sound?
Is it labour from above?
They're tryin' to lift the lid
They're tryin' to show you how to love
But you don't need it now it's all come crashing down around
And all you got's relief for being alone
Track Name: How To Change A City
You're gonna have to walk a little differently down that street
Oh man you'll see some things you might have never seen
Look out the other side of that train you're moving on
Otherwise you're staring at all the places she has gone

When everything reminds you of the impossible you tried
Think about something different, forget about the day she cried
Careful on the stones of your new direction found...

The sympathy of lovers isn’t always real, isn’t always sound

That path that rose to meet two pairs of feet
That bridge across the highway where you meet
Shift these monuments around like sand
The memory is more powerful than the hand

Every angle changes
Every sky is new
How can this be hers
When this is all from you
That star she drew upon your wall is just another star
She’s left those damn things everywhere you know...

You're gonna have to walk a little differently down that street
Oh man you'll see some things you might have never seen
Look out the other side of that train you're moving on
Otherwise you're staring at all the places she has gone

That time you ran the stairs one floor to high
To find you were alone but closer to the sky
Now to wind your way back to the ground

The sympathy of lovers isn’t always real, isn’t always sound

That road it doesn't lead to her, it leads to something past
And anyway it's just a road and these things never last
Tear it up, destroy this place you've built up beam by beam
You'll see when things are built again how easy it all seems
That bus goes to a suburb
Not towards her heart
That light comes from a tower
Not from golden hair
The wind blows same as ever
Now you are apart
And in this city filled with light, still the people stare
